As the world continues the fight to end this pandemic, you must understand that everyone has a role to play. World leaders have their role to play, health workers are playing their role; the rest of us must do the same. Here's what you must do to contribute to flattening the curve. It begins with practising hygiene and continues with social distancing. And now, the government has issued a lockdown directive that it's important we comply with.
Why Should You Stay At Home During The Coronavirus Lockdown?
The coronavirus outbreak is the biggest public health emergency in a generation; it calls for decisive action which should help reduce the spread of the virus.
The Government issued guidelines on Monday; urging members of the public to remain at home and to only go outside for food, health reasons or work (where this absolutely can’t be done at home). This isn’t just government advice, this is the best advice from the most experienced medical and scientific professionals in the world. And they are all saying the same thing.
Some of the world's most developed countries are employing the stay at home order as a means to curb the spread of the virus. In the UK, the prime minister has effected the lockdown, with a ban on public gatherings. Some states in America have done the same.
Here is a list of reasons why you should stay at home during this coronavirus lockdown.
Data has shown that it spreads from person to person; among those in close contact (within about 6 feet, or 2 meters). The virus spreads when respiratory droplets of someone with the virus coughs or sneezes. It also spreads if a person touches a surface with the virus on it and then touches his or her mouth, nose or eyes.
The New England Journal of Medicine just published a study that tested how long the virus can remain stable on different kinds of surfaces within a controlled laboratory setting. They found that it was still detectable on copper for up to four hours, on cardboard for up to 24 hours, and on plastic and steel for up to 72 hours.
Some infected persons can be asymptomatic, meaning they have no symptoms but have the disease. The people may go about infecting others without knowing. But staying at home reduces this possibility. This is one reason why you should stay at home.
So far, a million people have caught the coronavirus infection, and 50,000 of these people died.
Although most people with COVID-19 have mild to moderate symptoms, the disease can cause severe medical complications and lead to death in some people. Older adults or people with existing chronic medical conditions are at greater risk of becoming seriously ill with COVID-19.
Complications can include:
- Pneumonia in both lungs
- Organ failure in several organs
Staying At Home During The Lockdown Is One Of The Safest Ways To Prevent The Coronavirus From Spreading
When you stay at home, you're not only protecting yourself from infection; you're also protecting other people, especially the vulnerable in society. Finally, you're protecting healthcare workers too. Because if there were fewer people to care for in the hospitals, they would be at less risk of infection, illness and even death. Staying at home is the right thing to do, according to the World Health Organization.
In a tweet on its official handle, Wednesday, the WHO said a reduction of long periods spent sitting is one of the ways to stay healthy during the period.
Walking up and down the stairs, dancing for a few minutes and doing some stretching exercises are some of the things people should do while the lockdown persists, according to the agency.
“While you stay/work at home, reduce long periods spent sitting using active breaks every 30 mins,” the WHO tweeted.
It went ahead to list the following as stay-at-home tips during the lockdown:
1. Walk up & down the stairs
2. Do some stretching exercise
3. Dance to music for a few minutes
