Africans are known to usher in the New Year with celebrations, and we're not about to stop now.

Whatever the celebration, whether it's Christmas, Eid-El Maulud, New Yam Festivals, Osun Osogbo Festivals, we know how to make it a big deal. When you talk about New Year's, ah, that's even bigger! Because it touches everybody no matter their religious, social or cultural differences. If all you can afford are some firecrackers, you make sure that you fire away so hard, the New Year can hear you from another ten years away. Here are some ideas for New Year's celebration to help you usher in the year 2020 in grand style. After all, "Naija no dey carry last."

Getting ready for the New Year

Despite the fact that everyone celebrates New Year’s Day, we all celebrate quite differently. Here's a list of some of the things you could do to usher in the year properly:

  • Compose your New Year Greetings. You know, the ones you'll send to everyone on your WhatsApp list. You'll need to think about what to post on Facebook and Twitter. Not to mention personalized messages for close friends, and that special person. Grab a sheet and some wine, and start writing.
  • Visit those with whom you have scores to settle and bury the hatchet. You don't want to desecrate the new year by dragging old beef in. If they're far away, like out of town, do it on the phone. That's what mobile phones are for - bridging gaps. Just don't enter the new year with old baggage.
  • Go to your place of worship, whether it's a church or a mosque. After all, we're religious people. People gather in churches and mosques, praying for the year ahead. Most churches organize a "cross over service" and aptly named so, since what we're doing is crossing over into the new year. Sure you have plans to rock on, but cross over first.

Now let's show you our 5 ideas for New Year's celebration.

Every year, there's a huge show at Eko Atlantic City. It's the One Lagos Fiesta, organized by the Lagos state government. It's usually headlined by the biggest celebrities in the country. Plus, it boasts an amazing fireworks display and a countdown to the new year. It's one great way to celebrate the New Year.

Enjoy an Evening Cruise

For a stunning view of the Lagos shoreline and cityscape, attending a yacht party on the Lagos lagoon will do. A New Year's Eve boat tour affords the best views of the holiday fireworks display. So why not set sail across Lagos harbour aboard a luxurious cruise boat or a traditional tall ship for the ultimate experience. There's one organized by the Lagos Motorboat club, do keep an eye out for it.

Are you staying indoors this year? Perhaps you're a nursing mother or you have young kids, or you're just a homebody. No worries. You too can usher in the new year in your own way. Grab a bowl of popcorn and the TV remote control. There's bound to be several relevant movies and tv shows to watch.

Church

New Year's at church has less to do with religion and more to do with doing something fun to usher in the new year. Some churches go all the way, with huge fireworks displays, musical concerts, stage plays, etc. What's more, there are no tickets sales or gate fees. So Whether you're looking to pray in the new year or have fun, there's a church ready to welcome you.

The most important idea for new year celebrations is introspection. You have to make plans for all the great strides you will make. You will need some quiet time to do that. Make time-bound goals, and prepare to slay them.

Whatever you choose to do, plan to win in the new year, and for that one, we're rooting for you. May 2020 be the year you'll live to remember for all the right reasons.

Happy New Year!
