Multiple car crash claims the lives of 8 people
Eight people have been confirmed dead while 12 others are severely injured after a multiple car crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, is one of the many accidents that have happened on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The incident took place near a Danco filling station situated on the Expressway around 7:56 pm. The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun State, Mr. Clement Oladele, confirmed the accident to members of the press.
According to Oladele, the accident was a pile-on involving seven vehicles. The vehicles affected by the crash were a Toyota bus, a Toyota Sienna car, a Mazda bus, a Toyota Camry, an Iveco tanker, and two Daf tankers. The Sector Commander further blamed the accident on excessive speed and recklessness.
It is reported that the accident claimed the lives of 6 men and also a baby and her mother.
The Sector commander also had this to say:
“From our investigations, we have learnt that the unfortunate fatal crash happened due to reckless driving, speeding, and loss of control on the part of one of the vehicles. Unfortunately, a freight container fell from a trailer and landed on the two buses, crushing the buses in the process.
This led to a pile-on, as other vehicles slammed into each other in an attempt to steer clear of the fallen freight container and the crushed buses. Scores of people have been injured while 8 persons were declared dead at the scene.”
The people who were injured in the crash are currently receiving medical attention at the Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital. The remains of those who lost their lives have been deposited in the morgue.
The Federal Road Safety Corps has cautioned road users to maintain the 50km per hour speed stipulated by the National Road Traffic Regulation. Motorists have also been urged to obey traffic rules especially along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway which is still under construction.
