As a Godly parent, it is normal to worry about raising children in a world that is fast turning away from God. You may worry if your children will end up walking away, too. There are no guarantees that your child will stick with what you’ve taught them, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make the effort to know how to raise Godly children.

1. Pray for your children

You will need to start with prayer. Prayer makes it easy for your children to choose the path of Godliness despite what their friends are doing. Prayers will bolster their faith and make them unapologetic about doing the things of God. Prayer gives them peace in their heart, letting them know that no matter what is happening in their lives, God is in control.

You can pray for your children even whether or not they are around. Occasionally, you need to call get them to kneel before you as you speak words of affirmation over their lives.

2. Teach your children

In Proverbs 22:6, the Bible says: Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. How to raise Godly children will involve teaching your children the things of God. You can study the Bible together and listen to sermons. You will have to start teaching them from a very young age so that they can grow up used to these instructions.

You can teach them using Bible stories or real-life stories of people around you. At the end of every lesson, be sure to ask your children the moral lessons they got from the stories. That’s the best way to check if they understood you.

3. Set a Godly example

In Proverbs 13: 24, the Bible says: whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their child is careful to discipline them. This does not necessarily mean corporal punishment. Hitting a child is wrong and illegal in many places. You can discipline your children without raising your hand to them.

Discipline means you love your child and want them to do well. It shows the child they were wrong and helps them not to repeat the actions in the future. Most importantly, it teaches the child that there is a consequence for every action and that they always need to think things through.

5. Screen their entertainment and let them know how to make that choice for themselves

Knowing how to raise Godly children in a secular world will involve intentionally curating everything they see and hear. Play gospel music to them and monitor the movies and programmes they are exposed to. The goal is not to cut off all access without explaining to them your reasons for doing so.

You will have to sit them down and explain why you are cutting out these entertainment options. This way, you’ll be sure that even when you’re not around to monitor them, they will know how to protect themselves by consuming only wholesome entertainment content.

Peer pressure can destroy all the hard work you have put into raising Godly children. While it is not advisable to select your kids’ friends for them, you can teach them to fill their social circle with likeminded children. They should know that their friends reflect on who they are.
