Luca Trapanese: A single man who adopted a baby girl with Down Syndrome after getting rejected by 20 families
Luca's dream to be a father finally became reality in 2017. He had always wanted to be a father, but social services in Italy don't give custody to single, homosexual men. According to him, he was told that he could only adopt a baby with health problems. Thankfully, Luca has experience with children with special needs. Since he was 14, he has worked with organisations focusing on children with special needs. So when he finally got permission to adopt Alba, he was overjoyed. Her health problems were not an issue for him.
“When I first held her in my arms, I was overcome with joy. I felt she was my daughter straight away,” Luca said.
Before Luca turned up, Alba had previously been rejected by 20 families. Sadly, her health problems scared them away. It was for the same reason that her mother gave her up for adoption. Alba was born with a health problem called Down Syndrome. It occurs around one in every seven hundred pregnancies. People with Down Syndrome have slow brain development. It also affects the way they look physically.
Luca's story has since gone viral. It is not everyday heartwarming stories like these turn up. Today, Luca is a proud dad and his world revolves around Alba. According to him, Alba revolutionised his life. She brought him happiness and fulfilment. He's proud to be her dad and he wants her to be his daughter.
