Outrage As TI Reveals He Checks His Daughter's Hymen Every Year
In a recent interview, TI said he checks his daughter's hymen every year. According to him, he follows her to a gynaecologist to make sure it's "still intact."
To each their parenting style, but that doesn't mean a parent can't be doing it wrong. In a recent podcast interview, TI said he checks his daughter's hymen every year.
In his words, every year he follows his daughter to a gynaecologist to "check her hymen" and make sure it's "still intact."
TI Said He Checks His Daughter's Hymen Every Year
The interview was done by Nazanin Mandi and Nadia Moham on Ladies Like Us. During the interview, the rapper and actor spoke about different things, including his parenting style. And that's the part that has people taking on the internet. When T.I was asked if he's had the "sex talk" with his daughters, he talked about the parenting tactics he's been using with his daughter Deyjah Harris. Deyjah is an 18-year-old who's in her first year in college.
T.I. said, "Not only have we had the conversation— we have yearly trips to the gynaecologist to check her hymen. Yes, I go with her."
The rapper explained their arrangement after his daughter's 16th birthday. He put a sticky note on her door that announced an appointment with the gynaecologist the following day. The note read: "Gyno. Tomorrow. 9:30." T.I himself noted that the gynaecologist was always against him being present during the exercise. But he would make Deyjah sign a document that allowed the gynaecologist to share information in his presence.
"I’m like, 'Deyjah, they want you to sign this so we can share information. Is there anything you would not want me to know? See, Doc? Ain't no problem," he said.
Can The Hymen Be Broken Only Through Sex?
Interestingly, T.I. was told that there are many ways a woman can break her hymen that has nothing to do with having sex. Activities like horse riding, bike riding, and any other activities people do for sports. But this didn't discourage T.I from asking the doctor to go ahead with checking his daughter's hymen. Instead, he said to the doctor, "She don’t ride no horses, she don’t ride no bike, she don’t play no sports. Just check the hymen, please, and give me back my results expeditiously."
Finally, he confirmed that to the best of his knowledge, his daughter's hymen is not broken as at her 18th birthday.
Outrage On Twitter
As might be expected, T.I's style of parenting was severely criticised by a lot of people on the internet. Below is a selection of some reactions.
This TI discussion. Whew, chile. Let’s keep that young lady lifted up in feminist prayer.
That’s the kind of misogyny that takes a lifetime of therapy to unpack.
T.I. is just one example of how niggas really hate their daughters, bro. all that being overprotective and controlling because “you know how boys are…”
THEN, NIGGA, TALK TO THE BOYS!!! SHE CLEARLY AIN’T THE ISSUE!
T.I. is disgusting to discuss his daughter's sex life
Then to have the double standard of being ok with your 15 year old son having sex. And like, are you gonna beat her ass if she did?
And this feels like that "I didn't want a daughter bc I treated women like trash" bs.
Is virginity testing legal and accepted?
Virginity testing is a medical examination in which the doctor checks if a woman's hymen has stretched or torn. This practice has been used in the past to check if a woman is still a woman. A way to tie a woman's value to her virginity. But recently the practice is being widely condemned. Experts have said that it is unnecessary and without any benefits medically. The practice is not only a violation but also has a negative effect on women and girls. A report from the National Institutes of Health backs this up. It reveals how much damage the test can do to women and girls mentally.
OB/GYN Dr. Jennifer Gunter criticised T.I in a series of tweets. She tweeted, "The hymen is no virginity indicator, 50% of sexually active teens do not have a disrupted hymen." Adding that "the hymen means nothing physically and hymen exams are medically not a thing and are unnecessary."
Also, the World Health Organisation condemned virginity testing in a statement. They called it "a violation of the human rights of girls and women."
Part of the statement read: There is no examination that can prove a girl or woman has had sex. And the appearance of a girl's or woman’s hymen cannot prove whether they have had sexual intercourse, or are sexually active or not."
